At four percent, bone fractures are among the most common operations in Germany – usually involving the use of stabilizing screws and metal elements. The SmartFix project aims to make the progress of bone healing measurable: Strain measurement sensors on the metal elements and wireless data transmission to a receiving device replace the otherwise used monitoring by X-ray images. The project is being funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) with almost one million euros. The measurement systems are to be evaluated in an early clinical feasibility study in 2025.
